Come in Number 34….

There is a story doing the media rounds today that enters around Arsenal’s target, Granit Xhaka. It talks about the cost of the player and how it will now cost them more considering the present interests of multiple clubs. It is reported by Daily Star, Arsenal are willing to pay as much as £37 million Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder.

The 23-year-old has a release clause of €30million, which adds up to a little above £23 million. And when you consider this, why would anyone pay an extra £14m, I am sure that a part of that would just end up as salary or a “signing on” fee.

The Borussia Monchengladbach superstar admitted he wants to wear the No. 34 jersey at the Emirates Stadium should he complete a January transfer to the Gunners. Switzerland international has been linked with a move to Arsenal, with Monchengladbach’s sporting director Max Eberl saying this week the 23-year-old could depart the German side.

Xhaka wears the number 34 shirt at Monchengladbach and the midfielder has admitted he wants to continue wearing his favoured jersey number at his next team and reveals he has already spoken to Coquelin about taking the Arsenal midfielder’s shirt.

“That was my first professional number at Basel. It’s even tattooed on my back. I would also like to wear it in the future.” When asked what would happen if he joined Arsenal, he said: “It was also here in Gladbach, with Amin Younes. And at Arsenal Coquelin has it. I’ve spoken with him, he would like to take another number!”

Now the reason for me posting this is simple, and it concerns the subject of todays football journalists. I have now read the post on a very big football website a few times, and it just does not make any sense. Can anyone really believe that this player has had a conversation with Le Coq about his shirt number? For a start they can’t change the number in the middle of the season.

Does any one really believe that any club would pay an extra £14m for a player, £14m above a release clause that means if anyone bids that amount they can talk to the player. So why do journo’s write this stuff? I know this is, so far, a very quite window, and they have copy to write, but do they really have to make it up? Well I guess we will all have to just sit back and wait and see.
